World of Gray takes place several dozen years after world war 7. Less than 1000 humans remain in existance, and in order to prevent the extinction of their species, they geneticallty engineered their children to remove emotion. The thought behind this idea was that if nobody could feel anger, the deadly pandemic known as conflict would not harm them. This led to the removal of love as well, but the risk of maintaining emotion outweighed the reward, and survival was prioritized.
The society in which everyone resides goes by the name of Sparvis T5K. This name was created because nobody would agree on what they would consider a "good name," so they resolved to pick a name that nobody liked. Children in Sparvis T5k are taught from birth that maintaining the order of the society should be their first priority, then the survival of their species, then their own survival. They are also taught to speak clearly and pronounce words properly, children older than 8 years of age who are caught mispronouncing words are lightly chastised with a quick slap on the wrists with a flyswatter.
There is no limit on how many children a family unit can have, as long as every child is recorded within a week of their birth. When children become 8 years old, their behavior for the past 8 years will influence their permanent occupation, selected by the Sparvis Council. Each occupation is meticulously calculated based on the subject's physical attributes and psychological tendencies. However, if too few people are prime candidates for a certain job, some exceptions can be made. The possible occupations are as follows:
